WELCOME TO AUFO - Austin, TX

Welcome to Arcade UFO, the only Japanese-style Game Center in Texas!

Our goal is to bring you the newest and most interesting arcade titles from Japan, Korea, the USA and other countries while providing a haven for the fighting game, music game and racing game communities.

At the same time, we respect the origin of arcades and always try to feature a few great classic games with our limited space.

We opened Arcade UFO to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Einstein's Arcade (R.I.P.). Our goal is to continue Austin's 20+ year tradition of community-based video arcades.

We welcome gamers of all ages! Alcoholic beverages are not served nor allowed for consumption at the arcade.

Save the Arcades – WE NEED YOUR HELP!

zapataur

Ladies and gentlemen,

We are currently fighting an epic battle. That battle is to play as much Zapataur online as possible until Tuesday, October 6th, 2009.

Arcade UFO has held a strong lead thus far throughout the competition, but the fans of Starbase Arcade in Northern California are worthy opponents.

I wanted to write this post first of all to dearly thank everyone that has dedicated hours of their free time to playing Zapataur and donating their points to Arcade UFO. Your efforts are immensely appreciated, and I can’t give enough thanks for that.

Here is a quick guide on how you can help Arcade UFO win a $25,000 prize which will immediately be re-invested to make the best arcade in the U.S. even better. Let’s show ‘em what Austin is made of!

1) The points you earn in Zapataur need to be donated to Arcade UFO. You only need to enter your name, birthday, E-Mail address and password. Takes less than one minute, and you don’t have to wait for a confirmation E-Mail. If you can’t register, & are 13 or older, you can use this login to donate points:

login: defstar@alloymail.com
password: aufo

2) When the game is finished, click or press (D) to donate points, select “Arcade UFO”, type in the two security words and click OK. Don’t push (P) to play again–your points will be lost forever!

And that’s it! Whether it’s an hour or just 5 minutes you have to spare, we are extremely grateful for every bit you can help. Your efforts will not go unnoticed!

Tips:

- You can pause with the (H) key (triggers the help menu). Type (X) to resume.

- Marsupataur (#4) is by far the easiest character to use. The (S) key special attack, Giant Boxing Glove, can be used to absorb projectiles and also destroys several enemies at once. Try to use the (S) attack just enough so that your blue special attack bar never fully drains. This will enable you to get very far without getting hit. Also, make sure to catch the green ruby in every stage to refill much needed health!

Thanks again everyone, and if you’re in Austin with us, you can expect a giant bash at Arcade UFO on the week of October 6th if we manage to succeed!

DoDonPachi Daifukkatsu ver 1.5

The newest title to hit Arcade UFO this weekend is none other than the legendary DoDonPachi Daifukkatsu.  This crazy CAVE Shmup is the 5th game in the series released exclusively to Japanese arcades in 2008.  We proudly featured DoDonPachi (the second in the series) since we opened last year, and it’s always been the most popular Shmup title.

DoDonPachi Daifukkatsu features 3 different fighter pilots along with 3 different fighter “types” and 5 epic stages with multiple paths.  To get the true ending, you’ll have to satisfy many conditions throughout the game . . . who will be the first?

Gals Panic

This is one of the titles we picked up on a recent expenditure to Japan for Super Battle Opera 2009.  It got installed this past Saturday during our anniversary.  Gals Panic has a fascinating Austin history, which alone I think was worth putting it on the UFO floor.

For those of you with good memories, Gals Panic was released in 1990 and made its way to Einstein’s Arcade in 1991.  Among the many who played this game at Einstein’s was a group of young, impressionable musicians who went on to form the ska-punk band Gals Panic whose name was taken directly from the arcade game.  They broke up in 1997, but reunited for a one-time show at Emo’s 10 years later in 2007.

Gals Panic is essentially a modified version of Qix but with a different, uhh, theme.  Instead of just changing the screen’s color, the stakes are higher–you slowly reveal the silhouette of a scantily-clad early 90′s Japanese vixen.  Think girls like the lovely lass from Mr. Baseball . . . you remember that one, right?

The really hilarious feature of this game is the “adultness” of it.  You begin by picking one of six girls, each of which have three stages.  If you make it to a girl’s third stage, you might just get “rewarded”:

Gals-Panic(1)

Now before you go complaining to your church that this game has boobs (and it does, hooray!) allow me to state my thoughts.  In 1991, this game was pretty startling and probably sparked the interest of voyeurs and exhibitionists alike.  In 2009, this game has ridiculous digitized images of Japanese women with poofy hair using 1990 graphics.  Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely some lookers, but here we see classic arcade titles for what they are:  works of art.

Stop by and pay your tribute to Austin and arcade history for a measly 25 cents per play.
